Outbound's world is divided into five distinct biomes, each with its own resource profile, energy generation conditions, weather patterns, and points of interest. Understanding each biome before entering it allows you to prepare the right modules, sufficient energy capacity, and appropriate food buffs. This guide covers every confirmed detail about all five biomes: what resources you'll find, what POI types appear, how energy generation works there, and the strategic priorities for your time in each region.

๐ฟ The Meadows โ Starting Biome
The Meadows is Outbound's starting biome and your home for the first 30โ40% of any playthrough. Open, flat, and resource-rich, it teaches every core mechanic in a forgiving environment.

Strategy: The Meadows has a natural exploration circuit: start at the nearby Campsite (first Supply Crate), work toward the Trading Post, then loop the Research Outpost, and finish at the Lodge for dog adoption. Collect the Water Wheel and Herb Rack blueprints before leaving โ both are essential for all later biomes.
๐ฒ Dense Forest โ Second Biome
The Dense Forest is the first biome that actively challenges your energy setup. Canopy coverage reduces solar output by 30% and significantly reduces wind speed. Rivers are strong here, making Water Wheels excellent.

Park near a river whenever crafting for free Water Wheel generation. The Forest is resource-dense; dedicate one session purely to stocking materials before moving on.

The Arid Desert is Outbound's most mechanically demanding biome. Heat drains stamina unless the Cooling Module is active; water is extremely scarce; and the sparse terrain means POIs are far apart. However, solar output is the strongest of any biome at 1.3ร โ energy management is easy, but logistics require careful planning.

Strategy: Buy the Cooling Module from the Desert Trading Post before penetrating deep into the biome. Without it, stamina drains at ~3ร the normal rate during midday hours. Carry 15+ meals before entering. Navigate Oasis locations as primary waypoints for water resupply and Water Wheel sessions. The Crystal Lens from the Crystal Cave unlocks Tier 3 Solar โ this is the main reason to visit the Desert.
๐ Coast โ Fourth Biome
The Coast is Outbound's most resource-diverse biome and the best for Wind energy. Coastal weather means frequent light cloud cover (solar: 0.9ร), but the persistent sea breeze makes Tier 2 Wind Turbines the most powerful generation source in the game here. Tidal flow also boosts Water Wheel output by 20%.

Strategy: The Textile Station from the Coast Trading Post unlocks the dog's Standard Backpack and the Hammock โ both significant QoL upgrades. Prioritize Coast Trading Post on arrival. Coastal Shipwrecks provide the Advanced Metal stock for all late-game recipes โ do a full wreck circuit before leaving. Tidal Caves are time-gated to low tide (every ~20 in-game minutes) โ check the tidal indicator near the cave entrance.
๐๏ธ Mountain โ Final Biome
The Mountain is Outbound's late-game biome and its most visually dramatic. Altitude brings harsh conditions โ storm weather, reduced solar, and treacherous terrain โ but also the highest-tier materials and blueprints in the game. The Mountain Motor upgrade is required to ascend the main approach switchbacks.

Strategy: Do not enter the Mountain without the Mountain Motor upgrade (purchased at Mountain Trading Post base camp) โ the switchback roads are mechanically impassable without it. Carry 20+ meals and 800+ EU battery capacity before the ascent. The Mountain Research Outpost has three blueprint chests โ the Chemistry Lab, Ultra-Capacity Battery, and High-Efficiency Solar Array are the three most impactful late-game unlocks in the entire game. Find all three before descending.
