๐ฑ Outbound Beginner's Guide: First Steps, Tips & Complete Early Game Strategy
Starting Outbound for the first time is a delight โ the game introduces you gently to its systems and never overwhelms with urgent threats. But knowing where to focus your limited early resources and which systems to prioritize makes a significant difference in how quickly your van transforms from a bare chassis into a thriving mobile home. This guide covers everything you need for your first 3โ5 hours of Outbound: the optimal first-session plan, the most common beginner mistakes to avoid, and the precise order of priorities that sets up a smooth mid-game transition. Updated for Demo v1.2 / Full Release (May 14, 2026).

โฑ๏ธ First 15 Minutes โ What to Do First
You spawn in the Meadows biome with a Starter Motor, one Ore Smelter, one Basic Workbench, and one empty Garden Bed. Here is the exact optimal sequence for your first 15 minutes:
1. Gather immediately (0โ3 min): Before touching any menu or crafting station, walk 50โ80m in each direction from your spawn and collect: 10ร Wood (fallen logs), 6ร Stone, 4ร Fiber (tall grass near streams), and any visible Supply Crates (white crates at nearby campsites). This is your founding resource bank.
2. Smelt your first ore (3โ5 min): Look for grey Rock Outcrops on the ground โ interact to gather Iron Ore. Load 4ร Iron Ore into the Ore Smelter, hit Smelt. While it processes (30 seconds real-time), continue gathering.
3. Craft the Dog Bowl first (5โ8 min): Open the Basic Workbench. Your first crafted item should be the Dog Bowl (3ร Metal Component + 1ร Wood). Install it in the Interior slot immediately. This sets up dog adoption, which will be your most impactful early game unlock.
4. Plant your first crop (8โ10 min): Open the Garden Bed. Plant Carrots (find Carrot Seeds in Supply Crates or buy from Meadows Trading Post). Carrots are the fastest-growing crop, ready in ~8 in-game hours, and are used in multiple early cooking recipes.
5. Drive toward the Trading Post (10โ15 min): The Meadows Trading Post appears on your map at spawn (it's marked). Drive there. Your first purchase priority: 2ร Kibble (for dog adoption) and the Cooking Station blueprint. If you have enough Metal Components, also buy the Upgraded Motor blueprint โ but don't buy it yet, just note the cost for planning.
๐ Early Game Priority Order
After your first session, follow this priority order for the Meadows phase:
Priority 1 โ Dog Adoption: Drive to the Paws & Whiskers Lodge (๐พ icon, central-eastern Meadows). Requirements: Dog Bowl installed + 2ร Kibble. The dog's Fetch command is the most powerful early resource multiplier in the game. Adopt it as soon as possible โ every hour without it is an hour of missed passive resource gathering.
Priority 2 โ Cooking Station: Purchase the Cooking Station blueprint at the Meadows Trading Post and install it. The Camp Stove (pre-installed) can only make basic meals. The Cooking Station unlocks Van Breakfast (+15% all stats) and Herb Tea (+40% stamina regen), which dramatically speed up all other activities.
Priority 3 โ Second Battery Bank: Craft a second Basic Battery Bank. Your starter battery is 100 EU โ enough for day operations but will drain during overnight van usage. Two battery banks (200 EU total) provide comfortable overnight buffer for one Garden Bed + standby modules.
Priority 4 โ Upgraded Motor: Purchase the Upgraded Motor from the Meadows Trading Post (12ร Metal Component + 6ร Gear Part). This unlocks the Expanded Chassis (add-on purchase immediately after) and is the minimum requirement to navigate Dense Forest trails. Do not enter the Dense Forest with the Starter Motor.
Priority 5 โ Expanded Chassis: Purchase immediately after the Upgraded Motor. The +4 slots (12 total) add two Roof slots for a second Solar Panel and a Wind Turbine, and two Side slots for the Cooking Station and either a second Garden Bed or a Water Purifier. This is the most value-per-purchase upgrade in the early game.
Priority 6 โ Water Wheel Blueprint + Herb Rack Blueprint: Both are found at the Meadows Research Outpost (northern area, marked on map after approach). The Water Wheel provides free constant energy at any stream โ install it and park at the Meadows creek for all overnight crafting sessions. The Herb Rack dramatically extends herb shelf life, enabling Herb Tea production in bulk.
โ ๏ธ 10 Most Common Beginner Mistakes
Mistake 1 โ Building too much storage too early. New players often install 3โ4 storage chests immediately. Storage is passive โ it doesn't generate resources or speed up crafting. Two chests (1ร Small + 1ร Large after Trading Post purchase) is sufficient through the entire Meadows phase. Use those slots for functional modules instead.
Mistake 2 โ Forgetting to feed the dog. After adoption, many players forget to feed their dog daily. Happiness drops below 5 within 48 in-game hours without feeding. Below 5, Fetch radius shrinks 20% and Fetch return time increases. Feed the dog one Kibble or cooked meal each in-game morning.
Mistake 3 โ Entering the Dense Forest with Starter Motor. The Starter Motor can physically enter the Forest biome, but Dense Forest trail navigation requires Grade 10ยฐ hill-climbing that the Starter Motor cannot manage on steep sections. You will get stuck. Upgrade to the Upgraded Motor first.
Mistake 4 โ Not collecting the Meadows Research Outpost blueprints early. Many players save the Research Outpost for "later" and then realize they needed the Water Wheel and Herb Rack 5 hours ago. The Research Outpost is safe, clearly marked, and reachable with the Starter Motor. Visit it in hour 2.
Mistake 5 โ Running all stations simultaneously while driving. The Ore Smelter (12 EU/hr) + Motor (8 EU/hr starter) + Garden Bed (2 EU/hr) = 22 EU/hr draw. With only one Solar Panel (40 EU/hr peak, 0 at night) and 100 EU battery, this drains overnight completely. Craft while stationary and parked at a stream (Water Wheel) for free overnight energy.
Mistake 6 โ Selling all surplus materials. Trading Posts buy excess materials, but the prices are very low. Never sell Metal Components, Gear Parts, or Battery Cells โ these are used in every upgrade path. Sell only truly surplus items: excess Leafy Greens, duplicate food items, and raw Stone beyond 20ร stacks.
Mistake 7 โ Skipping the Cooking Station. The Camp Stove makes basic food only. The Cooking Station unlocks 10+ recipes including Van Breakfast (+15% all stats) and Herb Tea (+40% stamina regen). These buffs effectively give you 15โ40% more gameplay output per hour. Rushing the Cooking Station blueprint is always worth it.
Mistake 8 โ Not naming exploration waypoints. Outbound's map allows you to drop custom pins. New players explore without pinning, then spend 20 minutes trying to re-find the Paws & Whiskers Lodge or the Research Outpost. Pin every meaningful location on your first visit.
Mistake 9 โ Ignoring the Viewpoint POIs. Each biome has 1โ2 Viewpoint POIs (hilltops, lighthouses, etc.) that reveal large portions of the map when approached. Visiting the Meadows Viewpoint (NW hilltop) in your first session reveals 30% of the biome map, including the Trading Post, Research Outpost, and Lodge locations. Always visit Viewpoints early.
Mistake 10 โ Buying the wrong item at the Trading Post first. The Meadows Trading Post has many options. New players sometimes buy the Deluxe Sleeping Bunk (nice but late-priority) or a Wind Turbine (good, but not as impactful as Cooking Station first). Strict priority: Kibble โ Cooking Station blueprint โ Upgraded Motor plan. Everything else can wait.
โ Meadows Completion Checklist
Before leaving the Meadows for the Dense Forest, confirm you have completed:
Essential (must have): - โ Dog adopted from Paws & Whiskers Lodge - โ Upgraded Motor installed - โ Expanded Chassis (12 slots) installed - โ Cooking Station installed and at least 10 Van Breakfasts cooked - โ Basic Water Wheel blueprint collected (Research Outpost) - โ Herb Rack blueprint collected (Research Outpost) - โ Water Wheel installed (craft it before leaving โ you need streams) - โ 2ร Battery Banks installed (200 EU minimum) - โ 1ร Tier 1 Wind Turbine installed (for overnight generation) - โ Meadows Viewpoint visited (map revealed) - โ All Meadows Trading Post blueprints noted (Cooking Station purchased)
Strongly recommended: - โ 15+ cooked meals stockpiled (for Dense Forest entry) - โ Dog's first Fetch commands tested and happiness at 5+ - โ Carrot + Herb garden running in 2 Garden Beds - โ Hedgehog adopted (Meadows Lodge โ +30m detection bonus) - โ 20+ Advanced Metal in storage (needed for Dense Forest crafting immediately) - โ Meadows map 70%+ explored (all Cairn locations noted)
Optional but valuable: - โ Cat adopted (Meadows Lodge โ daily free item) - โ Bee Colony adopted (Research Outpost unlock โ honey production) - โ All Meadows Cairns collected (8 total โ gives permanent +5 EU/hr to all generation)
๐ฒ Transitioning to Dense Forest
When you're ready to leave the Meadows, your van should look roughly like this:
Recommended entry-to-Forest van configuration (12 slots): - Roof: 2ร Tier 1 Solar + 1ร Tier 1 Wind (or Tier 2 Solar if purchased) - Side L: Basic Workbench + Ore Smelter + Water Wheel - Side R: Cooking Station + 2ร Basic Battery Bank - Interior: Sleeping Bunk
At this configuration, your van is energy-positive in the Meadows (generates ~120 EU/hr day + 20 EU/hr night wind). In the Dense Forest (solar ร0.7), this drops to ~84 EU/hr day solar โ acceptable for basic operations, but you'll want to upgrade to Tier 2 Solar quickly.
Dense Forest immediate priority: Head directly for the Large Campsite POI (NE of Forest entry, marked after approach) and collect the Advanced Workbench blueprint. This is the single most important action in the entire Forest biome. Everything else is secondary.
